I know exactly how it feels to look at your car and feel a sense of dread instead of freedom!! You see a thirty-minute commute or a two-hour road trip to see family, and all you can think about is that searing, white-hot lightning bolt that is about to shoot down your leg. It is exhausting, and it makes you feel like a prisoner to your own driveway. Most of my clients come to me after they have tried everything — the pills, the generic physical therapy, the "back-friendly" cars — and they are still hurting. BUT, I am here to tell you that driving DOES NOT have to be a torture session!!

Dean Volk, MPT, is recognized as one of the leading sciatica relief experts in the United States, and over the years, I have helped 5,200+ clients find their way back to a normal life since starting my online business. What I have found is that most people are accidentally AGGRAVATING their nerves every time they turn the ignition. If you are tired of being a "couch prisoner" and you want to actually enjoy the open road again, you need to stop making these seven common mistakes!!

1. SITTING ON YOUR WALLET OR PHONE IN YOUR BACK POCKET

This is the ultimate "no-brainer" fix, BUT you would be shocked at how many people forget it!! When you sit on a thick wallet or a smartphone, you are creating an immediate pelvic tilt. This imbalance puts direct, localized pressure on the piriformis muscle and the sciatic nerve. You are essentially sitting on a rock for miles at a time!! This throws off your body's alignment before you even leave the driveway. IF you want to stop the "fake" sciatica (piriformis syndrome) or keep your actual spinal sciatica from flaring, you MUST clear your pockets!!

THE FIX: Make it a habit to toss your wallet and phone into the center console or the passenger seat BEFORE you sit down. This allows your "sit bones" to rest evenly on the car seat, which is the first step in my system to BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES. You cannot find stability IF your foundation is crooked from the start!!

2. HUNCHING FORWARD TOWARD THE STEERING WHEEL

I see this constantly with my clients who are in pain. When you are hurting, your natural instinct is to "protect" your back by leaning forward or "hunching" over the wheel. This is a HUGE mistake!! This position rounds your lower back (the lumbar spine) and increases the pressure on your discs. It actually PUSHES the disc material closer to the nerve you are trying to protect!! You are basically inviting the pain to stay for the whole ride.

THE FIX: You need to adjust your seat so you are upright. Your backrest should be at about 110 degrees — just a slight tilt back from a 90-degree angle. This keeps the natural curve in your spine. IF your car has lumbar support, use it!! If it doesn't, a small rolled-up towel in the small of your back can work wonders (for about 15-20 seconds of effort). You want to feel supported, not like you are reaching for the wheel with your whole body!!

3. PUSHING THROUGH THE PAIN FOR "ONE MORE MILE"

We all do it. We think, "If I can just make it to the next exit, I'll be fine." BUT, for a sciatic nerve that is already inflamed, every extra minute of compression is like throwing gasoline on a fire!! Your nerve needs blood flow and space to breathe. When you sit for hours, you are literally "choking" the nerve. I have had clients who couldn't drive 10 miles, but after learning how to manage their movement, they are back to traveling across the country!! You can read about their journeys on my testimonials page.

THE FIX: Set a timer on your phone or watch. IF you are in a flare-up, you should be stopping every 30 to 45 minutes. If you are feeling "okay," don't push past 90 minutes without a break. Get out, walk around the car three times, and do some gentle standing movements. This "resets" the pressure on your discs and allows the nerve to settle down before you start the next leg of the trip!!

4. KEEPING YOUR KNEES LOWER THAN YOUR HIPS

Most car seats are designed for "style" rather than "sciatica relief." If your bucket seat is tilted back so that your knees are lower than your hip joints, you are putting your hip flexors in a shortened position and tugging on your lower back. This creates a "tug-of-war" in your pelvis that the sciatic nerve ALWAYS loses!! This position makes it nearly impossible to maintain a balanced state while driving.

THE FIX: Adjust your seat height so your knees are at least level with your hips, or even slightly higher IF that feels better for your specific body. You might need to raise the seat or use a firm cushion to get the right elevation. This small change can be the difference between a "manageable" drive and a "miserable" one!! This is part of how we STABILIZE in a newly balanced position.

5. STRETCHING THE "PAIN SIDE" WHILE DRIVING

This is the mistake that usually shocks my new clients the most!! When you feel that pull in your left glute, what is the first thing you do?? You probably try to pull your knee to your chest or twist your spine to "stretch it out" while you’re at a red light. STOP!! If your nerve is irritated, stretching it is like pulling on a raw, frayed wire. It might feel "good" for five seconds because of the sensory input, BUT it will almost always make the inflammation worse ten minutes later!!

THE FIX: This is where the 180 Degree Sciatica Solution comes in. Frequently, the secret to stopping the pain is actually STRETCHING THE WRONG SIDE!! It sounds foreign to most people, but by moving the side that DOES NOT hurt, we can often shift the pressure away from the side that DOES. 6. IGNORING VEHICLE VIBRATION AND MAINTENANCE

Did you know that "whole-body vibration" is a major risk factor for lower back pain?? If your tires are out of balance or your shocks are shot, your body is absorbing thousands of tiny "micro-impacts" every single mile. For a healthy back, this is fine. For a sciatic nerve that is already sensitive, it is like someone is tapping on a bruise over and over again for the entire trip!!

THE FIX: Keep your vehicle maintained!! It sounds like "car advice," but it is actually "body advice." Ensure your tires are balanced and your alignment is straight. If your car feels "bumpy," your nerve is feeling it too. Also, consider the "step length" when you get in and out of the car. Don't "plop" into the seat. Sit on the edge first, then swing your legs in together like a mermaid. This avoids the shearing force on your pelvis!!

7. DRIVING WITHOUT A "BALANCE" RESET FIRST

The biggest mistake is thinking that the drive is the problem. The drive is just the TRIGGER. The real problem is that your body is likely out of balance BEFORE you even get in the car. If your pelvis is rotated or your spine is shifted, the static position of driving just locks that imbalance into place. You are essentially "setting" the concrete while it’s crooked!!

THE FIX: You MUST follow my 3-step process: 1. Balance out imbalances. 2. Stabilize in that newly balanced position. 3. Return to normal slowly and wisely. Before a long trip, you should spend 5 minutes doing your specific "balancing" movements to ensure your spine is neutral. If you don't know what your specific movements are, then you are just guessing, and guessing with sciatica is a recipe for disaster!!

I want you to imagine a world where you can sign up for a road trip without checking your medicine cabinet first. I have helped 5,200+ people get to that point, and I can help you too!! But I don't want you to commit to a long-term program IF your body does not respond to the movements first. That is why I created something special for you.
