I know exactly where you are right now. You are sitting at your kitchen table, looking at a stack of photocopied exercises that some well-meaning professional handed you weeks ago. You have followed the instructions. You have done the "knee-to-chest" stretches. You have tried the "bird-dog" poses. And yet, your leg still feels like it is being electrocuted every time you stand up. It is beyond frustrating!! It is exhausting. You are starting to feel like you might just have to live with this forever, or worse, face the surgery you have been trying so hard to avoid.
Dean Volk, MPT, is recognized as one of the leading sciatica relief experts in the United States. He has helped 5,200+ clients since starting his online business, and he has heard the same story thousands of times: "Dean, I did the handouts, but I only got worse." There is a reason for that. Standard medical handouts are designed for the "average" person, but your pain is not average. It is specific to YOUR body, YOUR imbalances, and YOUR life.
If you are tired of the generic advice and ready for a plan that actually sticks, keep reading. We are going to dive into why those handouts are failing you and how Dean’s unique 3-step process can finally turn the lights out on your sciatica pain.

1. THEY TREAT THE SYMPTOM, NOT THE SOURCE
Most handouts focus entirely on where you feel the pain — your lower back or your leg. They give you stretches for your hamstrings or your glutes because that is where it hurts. BUT, if your pain is coming from a pelvic tilt or a shift in your spine, stretching your leg is like trying to fix a leaky roof by mopping the floor!! You are managing the mess instead of stopping the leak. To get real relief, you must address the underlying mechanical imbalance that is putting pressure on that nerve in the first place.
2. AGGRESSIVE STRETCHING IRRITATES AN ALREADY ANGRY NERVE
This is the most common mistake I see. Handouts often suggest deep "piriformis stretches" or "hamstring stretches." IF your sciatic nerve is inflamed and compressed, pulling on it like a rubber band will only make it angrier!! Imagine having a raw, blistered finger and constantly pulling on the skin. It would never heal. Nerves do not want to be "stretched" when they are irritated; they want to be slackened and calmed down. This is why many of my clients find that stretching the "wrong" side (the non-painful side) is actually the key to relief.
3. THE "CORE STRENGTH" TRAP
How many times have you been told to "just strengthen your core"? Most handouts give you planks or crunches. BUT, if your body is already out of balance, forcing those muscles to fire can actually lock your spine into a painful position. You cannot build a stable house on a crooked foundation!! IF you haven't balanced your body first, core exercises often just increase the compression on your discs, making your sciatica flare up every time you try to "get stronger."
4. LACK OF PERSONALIZED FEEDBACK
A piece of paper cannot see you. It cannot tell if you are arching your back too much or if your hip is hiking up during a move. In my experience, even a 1-millimeter shift in position can be the difference between instant relief and a week-long flare-up. This is why I created the Sciatica Proof Lab — a FREE 3-day experience where I work with you 1:1 via Zoom for 30 minutes each day. I listen to your frustrations and manually guide your movements to make sure you are doing EXACTLY what your body needs. You cannot get that from a handout.

5. THEY IGNORE BODY ASYMMETRY
Handouts usually tell you to do the same thing on both sides. But sciatica is almost always a "one-sided" problem. Your body is likely leaning or shifting to one side to get away from the pain. IF you treat both sides the same, you are ignoring the very imbalance that caused the problem!! My 5,200+ clients have learned that we must first find the specific imbalance and "balance out" the body before we ever worry about doing things symmetrically.
6. RESTING FOR TOO LONG
Many older handouts tell you to stay in bed. This is outdated and dangerous advice!! Prolonged rest makes your muscles stiff and your joints "rusty." It actually slows down the healing process. BUT, you shouldn't just "push through the pain" either. You need the right kind of movement. My 3-step system — Balance, Stabilize, and Return — is designed to get you moving safely without the fear of a massive setback.
7. MISSING THE MECHANICAL "OFF SWITCH"
Your body has a mechanical way to take the pressure off the nerve. Handouts are too generic to find it. For some, the "off switch" is a specific pelvic tilt; for others, it is an arm reach combined with a leg shift. Once we find that "off switch" in the Sciatica Proof Lab, the relief can be almost instantaneous. IF you haven't found your specific off switch yet, you are just guessing.

8. NO PLAN FOR PROGRESSION
A handout is a snapshot in time. It doesn't tell you what to do when the pain drops from an 8 to a 4, or how to handle a rainy day when your back feels extra stiff. Real recovery requires a roadmap. You need to know how to "return to normal slowly and wisely" so you don't end up right back where you started. Most people feel a little better, go back to their normal gym routine, and boom — the pain is back. You need a bridge between "not hurting" and "living your life."
9. FEAR-BASED MOVEMENT
Handouts often make people afraid to move. You become so worried about doing the exercise "wrong" that you move like a robot. This tension actually creates more pain!! When I coach my clients via Zoom, my goal is to give them the confidence to move naturally again. We use movements that feel good, not movements that feel like a chore. IF movement feels like a threat, your brain will keep the pain signals turned on high.
10. THE DIAGNOSIS IS OFTEN INCOMPLETE
Doctors often give you a handout based on an MRI. But an MRI is just a picture of your bones and discs — it doesn't show how you move!! Many people have "sciatica" that is actually caused by how they sit, stand, or walk. If the handout doesn't address your daily habits, the pain will keep coming back. We have to look at the whole human, not just the scan.

HOW THE DEAN VOLK 3-STEP SYSTEM FIXES IT
I don't believe in handouts. I believe in results. Over my career, and specifically with my 5,200+ online clients, I have refined a process that works because it respects the body’s logic. Here is how we do it:
STEP 1: BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES. We don't just stretch; we find the specific position that takes the pressure off your nerve. We look at your pelvis, your ribcage, and your alignment. We find your "off switch."
STEP 2: STABILIZE IN NEWLY BALANCED POSITION. Once we find that relief, we need to "lock it in." We use specific, gentle activation exercises (not generic core work!!) to make sure your body stays in that pain-free alignment.
STEP 3: RETURN TO NORMAL SLOWLY AND WISELY. This is the most important part. We gradually introduce your favorite activities — whether that is golf, gardening, or just picking up your grandkids — with the tools you need to stay pain-free forever.
STOP GUESSING AND START HEALING
You have suffered long enough. If those handouts were going to work, they would have worked by now. I want to invite you to try something completely different. I want to invite you to the Sciatica Proof Lab. This is a FREE 3-day experience. It is not a recorded video or a generic PDF. It is 3 days of 1:1 coaching with me via Zoom. We will spend 30 minutes together each day. I will listen to your story, I will watch how you move, and I will help you find the relief you have been searching for.
I do not want you to commit to a full program IF your body does not respond during these three days. This is about proving to you that relief is possible. There is no reason to stay stuck in the "handout loop" when the answer is right in front of you.
