I know you are hurting. I know you have spent countless hours scrolling through YouTube, looking for that one "magic" move that will finally stop the burning, tingling, and sharp electrical shocks running down your leg. If you have been searching for relief, you have probably come across something called "nerve flossing." It sounds like a no–brainer, right?? If the nerve is stuck, you should just wiggle it loose! BUT, before you start yanking on your nervous system like a guitar string, we need to have a serious talk about why this popular trend might actually be making your pain WORSE.

At Sciatica Relief Now LLC, I have helped 5,200+ clients who were frustrated, exhausted, and losing hope. Most of them had tried nerve flossing before they found me. They were told it was the "gold standard" for sciatica relief, yet they were still unable to sit for more than ten minutes or sleep through the night without waking up in agony. The truth is, nerve flossing CAN be a tool, BUT it is often the WRONG tool to use first. IF you want real, lasting relief, you have to understand the order of operations for healing your body.

1. WHAT IS NERVE FLOSSING AND WHY IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT IT?

Nerve flossing (or neural mobilization, if you want to get fancy with the medical terms) is a technique designed to help your sciatic nerve glide through its surrounding tissues. Think of your nerve like a long thread passing through a series of narrow straws. IF the thread gets snagged or the straws get gunked up, the nerve cannot move freely when you walk, sit, or bend. This "snagging" causes inflammation and that dreaded shooting pain. The goal of flossing is to tension one end of the nerve while relaxing the other, creating a "sliding" motion (much like flossing your teeth) to break up adhesions.

Research has shown some mixed results here. Some older studies suggested it was a miracle fix, BUT more recent research — like a 2022 study by Sousa et al. — found that adding nerve flossing to standard exercises didn't actually produce significant extra improvement for many patients. This suggests that nerve flossing is often overprescribed to people who are NOT ready for it!! At Sciatica Relief Now LLC, I believe the reason it fails so often is that it ignores the most important factor: YOUR BODY’S BALANCE.

2. THE DANGER OF TUGGING ON AN IRRITATED NERVE

IF your nerve is already highly sensitive and inflamed, the last thing it wants is to be pulled and tugged. Imagine you have a raw, painful rope burn on your hand. Would you start rubbing that rope back and forth across the wound to "loosen it up"?? Of course not!! That would be crazy!! Yet, that is exactly what many people do to their sciatic nerve when they are in the middle of a flare–up.

My clients often tell me that their physical therapist had them doing nerve glides for weeks with zero progress. I tell them the same thing every time: IF the "tunnel" the nerve is traveling through is crooked because your pelvis is out of alignment, flossing is just going to irritate the nerve further against the bone or disc. You are essentially trying to floss a tooth while the floss is caught on a jagged metal edge. We have to fix the edge (your body balance) BEFORE we worry about the floss.

3. WHY TRADITIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MISSES THE MARK

Most traditional PT focuses on the "painful" side. They want to stretch the tight hamstring or floss the nerve on the leg that hurts. BUT, after helping 5,200+ clients, I have seen that the secret to relief often lies on the side that DOESN'T hurt. This concept is completely foreign to most people, but it is the cornerstone of the 180° Sciatica Solution. IF you only focus on the side where you feel the symptoms, you are just chasing the smoke while the fire continues to burn on the other side of your body.

When your body is imbalanced, one side of your pelvis might be higher or rotated differently than the other. This puts a constant, "silent" tug on the sciatic nerve. No amount of flossing WILL fix a structural imbalance that is keeping the nerve under constant tension (think of it like a rubber band stretched to its limit). You can read more about how this works in our guide on traditional PT vs. the 180° Method.

4. STEP 1: BALANCE OUT THE IMBALANCES

This is the first and most critical step in my 3–step system. BEFORE you ever attempt a nerve glide or a heavy stretch, you MUST bring your body back into neutral. I call this "leveling the playing field." We do this by performing specific, targeted movements — often on the non–painful side — to shift your pelvis and spine back into a position where the nerve isn't being pinched or pulled. (This usually takes only a few minutes to start feeling a shift!)

When you balance the body first, you are effectively "opening the tunnel" for the nerve. Once the pressure is off, the inflammation can finally start to go down. Many of my clients report a 50% or more reduction in pain just by getting this one step right!! 5. STEP 2: STABILIZE IN THE NEWLY BALANCED POSITION

Once we have moved your body into a balanced state, we can't just leave it there and hope for the best. Your body has "muscle memory" for its crooked, painful state. It WILL try to snap back into that old, imbalanced position the moment you stand up or walk to the kitchen. This is why Step 2 is all about stabilization. We use gentle, specific holds and movements (usually lasting 15–20 seconds per rep) to "lock in" that new, balanced alignment.

This is where most people fail when they try to heal on their own. They might find a stretch that feels good for five minutes, but because they didn't STABILIZE the change, the pain comes roaring back. In the 180° Sciatica Solution, we teach your nervous system that this new, balanced position is SAFE. This prevents the "yo–yo" effect of feeling good one hour and being back on the floor in pain the next!!

6. STEP 3: RETURN TO NORMAL SLOWLY AND WISELY

Only after we have balanced the body and stabilized the alignment do we even CONSIDER things like nerve flossing or returning to heavy exercise. This is Step 3: Returning to normal life. IF you jump to this step too early (which is what most people do when they see a "sciatica workout" on the internet), you WILL likely re–injure yourself. You have to earn the right to move again by proving your body is stable.

When you reach this stage, nerve flossing might actually be helpful because the "tunnel" is now straight and the nerve is no longer being crushed. Now, the gliding motion can actually do its job of clearing out minor adhesions without causing a massive flare–up. It is all about the TIMING. If you do the right thing at the wrong time, it becomes the wrong thing!!

7. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF NERVE FLOSSING IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

IF you are currently in high levels of pain (an 8, 9, or 10 on the pain scale), nerve flossing is a HARD NO. Your nerves are too "irritable" and need calming, not flossing. IF you have been doing nerve glides for more than two weeks and haven't seen a significant change in your ability to move, it is time to stop. You are likely flossing against an obstruction that needs to be cleared through balancing first.

I have seen so many people regain their lives — returning to hobbies like painting, gardening, or even rowing — simply by following these three steps in order. One of my clients had 16 years of pain and found relief in their very first consultation because we finally addressed the balance issue rather than just poking at the nerve!! You can see more stories of these transformations on our testimonials page.
