Eef’s journey did not start with a major accident. Like many of my clients, it was a slow burn of Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatica that eventually stole her independence. She tried everything you have probably tried. The physical therapy (where they just give you the same three stretches as everyone else), the injections that mask the pain for a week or two, and the endless "advice" from people who have no idea what it feels like to have lightning bolts shooting down your leg every time you stand up!!

The first thing Eef and I talked about was why everything she had tried before failed. Most physical therapy focuses on "strengthening" or "stretching" the area that hurts. BUT if your body is already out of balance, stretching the painful side can actually make the nerve more irritated!! I know it sounds foreign to most, but sometimes the answer is to stop touching the painful area altogether and look at what is happening on the opposite side. Eef had been told to stretch her piriformis for years, and it only made her more stuck on that couch. We had to flip the script entirely!!

2. STEP ONE: BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES

The very first step in my 180 Method — and the first thing we did for Eef — is to BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES. This is the "secret sauce" that most people miss. Your body is like a car with a bad alignment. If you keep driving (or exercising) while the alignment is off, you WILL blow out a tire. For Eef, we had to find where her body was pulling lopsided and use specific, gentle movements to bring her back to center. This is not about "working out." It is about sending a signal to your nervous system that it is safe to let go of the muscle spasms. Within just a short time of focusing on balance instead of stretching, Eef started to feel the "grip" of the pain begin to loosen for the first time in half a decade!!

3. STEP TWO: STABILIZE IN THE NEWLY BALANCED POSITION

Once we got Eef’s body balanced, we could not just send her back to her old habits. That is where most programs fail. They give you a little relief, and then you go right back to the movements that caused the problem in the first place. My second step is to STABILIZE in that newly balanced position. We taught Eef’s brain and muscles how to stay in alignment. This is not about doing 100 crunches!! It is about small, purposeful movements that hold the "alignment" in place so the nerve has room to breathe. Imagine the relief Eef felt when she realized she could stand up to go to the kitchen without her leg giving out!! That is the power of stabilization.

4. STEP THREE: RETURN TO NORMAL SLOWLY AND WISELY

The final piece of the puzzle for Eef was the RETURN TO NORMAL SLOWLY AND WISELY. After five years on a couch, you cannot just go run a marathon. Your body needs to be reintroduced to life. We worked on her gait, her sitting posture, and how she moved throughout her day. I guided her through the process of rebuilding her confidence. When you have been in pain for that long, you become afraid of movement. I call it "movement kinesiophobia." We had to prove to Eef’s brain that she was NO LONGER IN DANGER. By following this wise progression, she went from being couch-bound to walking around her neighborhood, grocery shopping, and finally getting her life back!!

I remember the excitement in Eef’s voice when she told me she had spent the whole day OFF the couch. For most people, that sounds like a normal Tuesday. For Eef, it was a miracle. She had regained her independence. She was no longer waiting for someone to help her or wondering IF she could make it through the day without a flare-up.
