You may be standing on the answer without realizing it.
At the kitchen counter, you lean into one hip. In the grocery line, one leg does all the work. At the sink, you rest your weight on the same side. While waiting for the dog, you let one hip drift out and allow the other leg to relax.
You do this for a few minutes at a time. Then for hours across the day. Eventually, your body begins treating that uneven position as normal.
If your sciatica gets worse while standing, walking, cooking, waiting, or doing chores, the problem may not be that standing is inherently bad. The problem may be the side you always stand on.
You are not broken, and you are not crazy
If you have tried stretching, medication, injections, chiropractic adjustments, massage, strengthening exercises, or even surgery discussions, I know how exhausted you feel. You have followed instructions. You have done what you were told. Yet the pain keeps returning.
You may feel like your body is betraying you. It is not. You are not broken. You are not asking for too much. You have likely been looking in the wrong direction.
For 17 years I worked inside the traditional model and followed the standard approach. I treated the painful side because that was what I had been taught. The results were poor. Under the traditional model, only 15-20% of clients got lasting results.
Then I discovered the reversal that changed everything: the answer was often on THE OPPOSITE SIDE.
That is why my approach is 180° different. Instead of repeatedly attacking the painful side, I look at the compensations that created the imbalance. One of those compensations is the side you habitually stand on.
The one-sided standing habit quietly changes your body
When you shift most of your weight onto one leg, your pelvis no longer sits evenly between your feet. One hip moves outward. Your trunk may lean slightly. Your spine, pelvis, and hip muscles begin sharing the workload unevenly.
That position can feel comfortable because it allows one side to rest. But comfortable does not always mean helpful. Over time, the weight-bearing side may stay loaded while the opposite side contributes less. The muscles around your hips and pelvis then adapt to the pattern.
This does not prove that your standing habit is the only cause of your sciatica. It does give you an important place to look, especially if your symptoms include:
- Pain or burning that increases after standing for several minutes
- Buttock or leg pain that appears during cooking, shopping, or waiting
- A familiar need to lean on one hip to feel comfortable
- A sense that one leg is doing all the work
- Sciatica that keeps coming back after temporary relief
Cleveland Clinic describes sciatica as irritation or compression involving the sciatic nerve, with symptoms that can include pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. You can review its general sciatica information here.
The important point is simple: your standing pattern can reinforce the same imbalance that keeps irritating your back, pelvis, hip, or leg.
Try this body balancing self-assessment right now

This is a self-assessment, not a diagnosis. You are simply noticing a habit that is usually invisible.
Stand near a counter, wall, or sturdy surface so you can steady yourself if needed. Then follow these steps:
- Stand with both feet flat and about hip-width apart. Do not force perfect posture. Just notice where your weight naturally goes.
- Imagine you are brushing your teeth. Stay in that position for 15-20 seconds.
- Notice which leg feels heavier, which hip moves outward, and whether one knee bends while the other leg stays straight.
- Ask yourself how quickly you shift onto one side. Does it happen immediately, within 5 seconds, or after 15 seconds?
- Reset with both feet grounded. Then repeat the same observation while standing at the kitchen counter or waiting in line.
You are looking for repetition, not perfection. If you repeatedly move onto the same hip without noticing, that is useful information. It does not tell you exactly why you have pain. It tells you that your body may have developed a one-sided standing strategy worth addressing.
Do not push through sharp, electric, or increasing symptoms during this check. Stop if your pain rises.
Everything you have tried may have been backwards
Most people are told to focus on the painful side. Stretch the painful side. Strengthen the painful side. Release the painful side. Keep pressing on the area that already feels threatened.
But if the painful side is reacting to an imbalance somewhere else, repeatedly attacking it can keep the cycle going. Your body may be protecting one side because the other side has stopped carrying its share of the load.
That is the 180° reversal. Instead of asking only, “What hurts?” I ask, “What is the opposite side doing?”
If you always stand on your left leg, for example, we do not automatically decide that your left leg is the problem. We look at how that habit changes your pelvis, trunk, right leg, and painful side. The side you avoid may be the side that needs to be reintroduced correctly.
This is body balancing. It is not about forcing your body into a rigid military stance all day. It is about restoring a more even relationship between both sides so your body has a better position from which to heal.
Balance, Stabilize, Return

The 180° Sciatica Solution follows a clear sequence.
First, Balance.
You identify the compensation pattern and begin working with the opposite side. The goal is to reduce the uneven loading created by your habitual stance and restore better balance through the pelvis, hips, and trunk.
Next, Stabilize.
Once your body finds a more balanced position, you need custom strengthening exercises to help it hold that position. This is where many people rush. They start strengthening before the imbalance is addressed, and the exercises simply reinforce the same old pattern.
Finally, Return.
You return to the activities you care about, including standing, walking, driving, traveling, playing with your family, and working around the house. You learn maintenance techniques so your progress holds in real life, not only during an exercise session.
That sequence is 180° different from repeatedly chasing symptoms on the painful side.
Why I trust this approach
Dean Volk, MPT, is an International Sciatica Consultant. He focuses on sciatica education and coaching and created the 180° Sciatica Solution. I have helped more than 10,000 sciatica sufferers, including over 5,200 people online since 2018. In my own work, 95-97% of clients report meaningful change (self-reported); results vary.
Many of the people I help have suffered for months, years, or even decades. They come to me after trying nearly everything. They are skeptical because they have heard promises before. I understand that. I do not want you to believe me because of a headline. I want you to test what your own body does. On average, people report a 50% improvement in 3 to 5 weeks, and 85% improvement by 8 weeks. Results vary.
The 180° Sciatica Solution is designed to help clients break sciatica by balancing the body, stabilizing the balanced position, and returning to normal activity. Most clients see meaningful change within 8 weeks. Timelines vary by person. No medications, injections, or surgery are required for the approach itself.
The first step is not a long commitment. It is proof.
Test the opposite side in the Free 3-Day Sciatica Proof Lab

The Free 3-Day Sciatica Proof Lab is a three-day experience with three private 1:1 Zoom sessions with me. Each session lasts 30 minutes.
This is not a webinar, group call, or recording. I listen to your frustrations, look at your movement patterns, and manually guide you through body balancing movements. We test the opposite side and observe how your body responds.
Day 1 focuses on finding what is actually driving your sciatica. Day 2 focuses on targeted balancing. Day 3 focuses on reviewing your response and deciding what comes next.
It is FREE. No credit card. No obligation. I do not want you to commit to a program IF your body does not respond.
Apply directly at www.SciaticaProofLab.com. You can also learn more about the Free 3-Day Sciatica Proof Lab here.
Know when to seek urgent care
A standing habit is not an explanation for every kind of leg or back pain. Seek prompt medical attention if you have rapidly worsening weakness, rapidly increasing numbness, new difficulty lifting the front of your foot, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or saddle area.
If your symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with daily life, speak with a qualified healthcare professional. A self-assessment can show you a pattern, but it cannot replace an evaluation.
Your next step is simple
The next time you brush your teeth, stand in line, wait for your dog, or work at the sink, notice which leg you trust first. Notice which hip moves outward. Notice how long you can stand evenly before your body shifts.
Then ask yourself the question most people never ask: “What is the opposite side doing?”
You are not broken. You have been repeating a pattern. Patterns can change. If you are ready to test a 180° different approach and start working toward sciatica relief, apply for the FREE 3-Day Sciatica Proof Lab at www.SciaticaProofLab.com.
