IF you are reading this, there is a very high probability that you have been told — over and over again — that the "secret" to fixing your sciatica is a "stronger core." You have probably spent weeks or even months doing planks, bird-dogs, and bridges, only to find that your leg pain is actually getting WORSE! It feels like a betrayal, doesn't it? You are doing exactly what the doctors and the general physical therapists told you to do, yet every time you "brace" your trunk, that lightning bolt of pain shoots down your leg with even more intensity.   1. BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES

The first and most critical step in my 3-step system is to BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES. This is the step that almost everyone misses! When you have sciatica, your brain is incredibly smart — it moves your spine away from the pain to protect the nerve. You might not even notice it in the mirror, but your muscles are "guarding" and pulling you to one side. This creates a massive imbalance in trunk muscle activation. One side is working overtime (constantly tight), while the other side is essentially "turned off."

IF you try to do a plank or a core bracing exercise while you are in this imbalanced state, what do you think happens? You are simply strengthening the imbalance! You are teaching those already-overactive muscles to pull even HARDER on your spine, which increases the pressure on the disc and the nerve. This is why traditional core work "flares" you up. We MUST find the movement that balances the body FIRST. Often, this involves doing movements toward the "healthy" side — the side that doesn't hurt — to create space for the nerve on the painful side. UNTIL your body is balanced and the "shift" is gone, "core strength" is actually your enemy!

  1. STABILIZE IN NEWLY BALANCED POSITION

Once we have successfully balanced your body — and you feel that immediate reduction in pain (sometimes as much as 80% in just a few days!) — THEN we move to the second step: STABILIZE IN NEWLY BALANCED POSITION. This is where trunk muscle activation actually becomes helpful, BUT it has to be done specifically. We aren't just "squeezing our abs." We are teaching the brain how to hold this new, pain-free alignment during movement.
