It sounds completely backwards, right? BUT let me tell you something that might shock you: focusing ONLY on the painful side is exactly why you aren't getting better!!

1. UNDERSTANDING THE TUG-OF-WAR IN YOUR PELVIS
Imagine your pelvis is like the mast of a ship. There are ropes (muscles) pulling on it from every direction to keep it straight. IF the ropes on the right side become incredibly tight and short, they are going to pull that mast to the right. Now, the ropes on the left side (the side where you feel the sciatica) are being stretched to their absolute limit just to try and hold the mast up!! They are under massive tension, they are exhausted, and they are screaming in pain. If you go in and start stretching those already over-stretched left-side ropes, what do you think happens? They snap!! Or, at the very least, they get much angrier!!
This is why stretching the "painful" side often makes sciatica worse. Your brain senses that the muscle is already under too much tension and it sends a signal to TIGHTEN UP even more to protect the nerve. BUT IF you stretch the "healthy" side — the side that is actually doing the pulling — the mast moves back to the center. Suddenly, the painful side can finally relax because it isn't being pulled on anymore!! It is a total game-changer for my clients who have felt stuck for years.

2. WHY YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY IN "PROTECTION MODE"
Your body is incredibly smart. When you have a disc bulge or a pinched nerve, your brain goes into a high-alert state called "protection mode." It creates muscle spasms to act like a natural splint around your spine. IF you try to aggressively stretch the side that hurts, your brain views that as a threat!! It thinks you are trying to pull the nerve apart, so it fights back by making you even tighter. This is a physiological loop that you cannot win by force.
Stretching the "healthy" side is like a "backdoor" hack into your nervous system. Because that side doesn't feel threatened, your brain allows those muscles to let go. As the non-painful side releases (usually after just 15-20 seconds of a targeted move), the overall tension in your pelvis and lower back drops. Your brain realizes the "threat" is gone, and it finally allows the muscles on the sciatica side to stop guarding. This is how we achieve that "instant" relief that seems like magic to people who have struggled for a decade!!
3. THE POWER OF BODY BALANCING OVER SYMPTOM CHASING
Traditional medicine is great at "symptom chasing." If your knee hurts, they look at the knee. If your back hurts, they give you a shot in the back. BUT the body is a closed system connected by a web of tissue called fascia. Research shows that stretching and movement restore elasticity in this fascia, helping your entire system communicate better. IF one part of the web is bunched up, the whole web is distorted!!
By focusing on the "healthy" side, we are performing what I call Body Balancing. We aren't just trying to kill the pain; we are trying to fix the structural reason why the pain started in the first place. My 180° Method is built on this exact logic. It is foreign to most people at first, but once they feel that first "click" of balance, they never go back to the old way of doing things!!

4. STEP 1: BALANCE OUT IMBALANCES
This is the foundational step of my 3-step system. Before we can strengthen you or get you back to the gym, we HAVE to get you level. You cannot build a sturdy house on a slanted foundation!! In this phase, we use specific, gentle movements on the "non-painful" side to encourage the pelvis to sit level. We look at your step length, your hip rotation, and even how your shoulders sit. IF we find that you are leaning away from the pain (which almost everyone does), we work to bring you back to center by releasing the side you are leaning TOWARD.
Most of my clients see a 50% to 80% reduction in pain just by completing this first step!! (And yes, that usually happens within the first week). When you stop fighting your body and start working with its natural mechanics, the results are incredibly fast.
5. STEP 2: STABILIZE IN THE NEWLY BALANCED POSITION
Once we get you balanced, we can't just leave it there. Your body has "muscle memory," and it will want to pull back into that old, painful, crooked position the moment you sit down or drive your car. This is where stabilization comes in!! We use very specific, low-impact exercises to "lock in" that new alignment. We aren't doing heavy squats or crazy planks yet; we are teaching your small, deep stabilizing muscles how to hold your pelvis in its new, happy home.
This is the stage where people start sleeping through the night again. I had a client recently who hadn't slept more than 3 hours at a time for 5 weeks. After we balanced her out and gave her a stabilization move for her "healthy" side arm and hip, she got 10 hours of pain-free sleep!! That is the power of stabilizing the right way.

6. STEP 3: RETURN TO NORMAL SLOWLY AND WISELY
The final step is getting you back to your life. Whether that is playing with your grandkids on the floor, getting back to the golf course, or just being able to walk through the grocery store without needing to lean on the cart. BUT we have to do this wisely. IF you jump right back into your old gym routine or start lifting heavy boxes without maintaining your balance, the sciatica WILL come back!!
